Kia ora koutou,
We are excited to announce that we will be returning to to Waitangi for Hīkoi ki Waitangi: Karuwhā 2019 – and would like to invite you to join us.

The four-day experience is held over the Waitangi Commemorations, 3-6 February, and is an invitation to visit significant sites, to sit in the whenua, to spend time listening to stories of our past, to seek a better understanding of our country and to not just observe but participate by serving alongside the hau kainga (the local hosts).

Waitangi sits at the heart of our identity in Aotearoa. It's where the Treaty was first signed and it’s home to the people who welcomed New Zealand’s first Christian missionaries. The stories of Waitangi are our stories; they are your stories. Karuwhā Trust exists because without our history, our ‘now’ is pretty disjointed.

Programme elements:

  • Visit Oihi Bay where Ruatara invited Samuel Marsden to preach his famous Christmas Day message in 1814
  • Join Henry Williams’ descendant, Elisabeth Ludbrook, on a tour of the Paihia church and mission grounds
  • Witness the build-up to Waitangi Day, hear the political conversations, and participate in the commemorations
  • Attend the Waitangi Day Dawn Service
  • Hear from Kaumatua and historians
  • Serve alongside the hau kainga (the people of Te Tii Marae, the hosts) as they host the Waitangi day commemorations, by serving in the kitchen as they feed hundreds of people, and/or help with car parking, cleaning etc.
  • Connect and korero with others from across Aotearoa over shared meals and time in the Karuwhā tent
  • Swim, walk, eat and laugh
  • Plus more ++
